Salmon River

About the River

The Salmon River rises near Galena Summit above Idaho's Sawtooth Valley and runs roughly 425 miles through central Idaho before joining the Snake River, making it the longest undammed river in the contiguous United States. Early trappers and prospectors called it the River of No Return: its swift current and continuous rapids made upstream travel by boat all but impossible, so anyone who floated down had little hope of coming back up. The river carries that reputation into the present as one of the premier multi-day wilderness floats in the country.

From North Fork, the river runs through a broad, accessible valley before Corn Creek marks the edge of the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness, the largest contiguous federally managed wilderness area outside Alaska. The 79 miles from Corn Creek to Vinegar Creek are roadless and permit-only, with Class I-IV rapids and sandy beach camps below towering canyon walls. Below Vinegar Creek the river returns to road access, running past Riggins and on to White Bird, with steady Class II-III water and excellent steelhead and salmon fishing throughout.

Flows near Corn Creek are best read from the gauge near Shoup, upstream of the wilderness section. Flows through Riggins and below are best read at the White Bird gauge, which runs roughly double the volume once the Middle Fork, South Fork, and other tributaries have joined in. A Forest Service permit lottery each winter controls launches for the wilderness section between Corn Creek and Vinegar Creek; the sections above and below are open access. Peak flows arrive with snowmelt in late May and June, and the float season runs into September.
