Colorado's premier Gold Medal tailwater, flowing 14 miles from Ruedi Dam through world-class trout water to the Roaring Fork at Basalt.
About the River
The Frying Pan River flows roughly 14 miles from Ruedi Dam to its confluence with the Roaring Fork River at Basalt, Colorado. The entire stretch below the dam carries Colorado Parks and Wildlife's Gold Medal designation, recognizing exceptional wild trout populations sustained by cold, consistent releases from Ruedi Reservoir. Completed in 1968 by the Bureau of Reclamation, Ruedi controls flows year-round and anchors one of the most celebrated tailwater fisheries in the American West. Rainbow and brown trout averaging 14 to 18 inches inhabit virtually every pool and riffle from dam to confluence.
The upper canyon immediately below the dam is the most intensively fished stretch, with the first 0.6 miles restricted to catch-and-release, artificial flies and lures only. Year-round hatches of Blue-Winged Olives, midges, and Pale Morning Duns attract drift boats and wade anglers from across the country. The lower canyon carries more gradient, with Class II boulder gardens and technical pools that reward floaters and kayakers with fewer crowds and equally strong fishing.
The USGS Near Ruedi gauge (09080400) tracks flows for the entire tailwater run. Releases from Ruedi Reservoir are coordinated by the Bureau of Reclamation and fluctuate with irrigation deliveries and storage. Flows tend to be most consistent through spring (April to June) before midsummer irrigation draws reduce releases. No permit is required to float or fish the Frying Pan.
